New York Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a vaginal rejuvenation surgery that focuses on tightening the inner vagina. Following childbirth, the inner muscles of the vagina may not return to their prenatal state and women can begin to experience vaginal laxity. Some women may also develop vaginal laxity due to the effects of aging or weight loss, or it may be a condition present since birth. Vaginal laxity can lead to a number of unwanted side effects, including:

Reduced sensation for one or both partners during intercourse
Difficulty using tampons and other feminine hygiene products
Decreased self-confidence and a feeling of lost femininity
Lowered sex drive due to insecurity or self-consciousness

At Millennial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Marc Everett and Dr. David Shokrian want to help you recapture your self-confidence and restore your sex life with a vaginoplasty procedure. Whether your vaginal laxity is a result of childbirth, aging, weight loss or genetics, Drs. Everett and Shokrian can correct it using a vaginal rejuvenation procedure.

The Procedure

Vaginoplasty is completed under general anesthesia. Once the patient has been numbed, the surgeon makes a small incision on the posterior floor of the vaginal canal. Through the incision in the mucosa, the surgeon can tighten the underlying stretched muscles using sutures. Childbirth places an immense amount of pressure on the vaginal muscles and they may not recover to their original tightness, especially after delivering multiple children. Tightening the inner muscles provides an immediate change in the diameter of the vaginal canal, creating an instant improvement in vaginal laxity.

Once the muscles have been tightened, any excess skin is removed from the inner vagina. Muscle tears during childbirth can lead to the formation of scar tissue that makes intercourse uncomfortable and painful, so any scar tissue will be removed as well. After all the excess tissue has been removed, the mucosa is sutured shut using dissolvable stitches. The procedure lasts between one and two hours.

Recovery and Results

Vaginoplasty is a relatively mild procedure and does not require an overly uncomfortable or lengthy recovery. Patients can return to work in two to five days, depending on the nature of their job and their pain levels in the days immediately following surgery. Exercise and strenuous activities can be resumed after six to eight weeks. Intercourse and the use of tampons can be resumed about eight weeks following the procedure.

Common side effects from vaginoplasty include aching, soreness, mild swelling and light bleeding during the first 24 hours. Any discomfort or pain will improve over the first week and may be managed using prescription medication. All incisions are kept within the vagina and will not result in visible scarring. Vaginoplasty yields results that appear completely natural.

Results following vaginoplasty are immediate, as patients will experience an instant improvement in the diameter of the vaginal canal. Patients will receive a noticeable difference following recovery during moments of intimacy.

Q&A with Drs. Everett and Shokrian

Who is a good candidate for vaginoplasty?

Good candidates for vaginoplasty are women who have developed vaginal laxity due to childbirth, aging, weight loss or genetics. Patients should be done having children and be prepared to take time off from work or other responsibilities during the recovery process. We can better determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure following an in-person consultation.

Will vaginoplasty affect my ability to bear children?

We recommend that all patients interested in vaginoplasty wait until they are done having children before moving forward with the procedure. Childbirth will not only undo the results of the surgery but may also become more difficult following a vaginoplasty procedure.

Will vaginoplasty change the shape or size of my labia at all?

No, vaginoplasty deals strictly with the interior of the vagina. All incisions are made in the interior skin and will not produce visible scars. For patients interested in changing the physical appearance of their vagina, we recommend a labiaplasty procedure.

Can vaginoplasty be combined with labiaplasty?

Absolutely. We can combine vaginoplasty with labiaplasty for comprehensive vaginal rejuvenation that tones the inner vagina and reduces the size of the labia majora or minora. Let us know during your initial consultation if you are interested in both procedures and we will provide an individualized treatment plan that addresses all of your concerns.

What age is optimal for undergoing vaginoplasty?

Adult patients of any age are good candidates for vaginoplasty. Vaginoplasty can be performed on pre- or post-menopausal women, so long as the patient is done having children and is healthy enough for surgery. Schedule an appointment with us to learn more.

Are there any risks associated with vaginoplasty?

Risks following vaginoplasty surgery are very uncommon and typically minor. Risks may include bleeding, infection or scarring. We will discuss potential risks with you in more detail prior to the surgery.

Should I start doing Kegel exercises following my procedure?

Kegel exercises are simple movements that can be used to tighten the pelvic floor muscles to a much lesser extent than vaginoplasty. In order to provide the best results from your procedure, we recommend incorporating Kegel exercises to add even more strength to the underlying muscles of the vagina. Patients interested in performing Kegel exercises will need to wait six to eight weeks before they have recovered enough to begin the exercises.

Will vaginoplasty eliminate urinary incontinence?

Vaginoplasty is not intended to eliminate urinary incontinence following childbirth. Some patients may find that the procedure improves incontinence, but that is not the intention of the surgery.
